San Antonio and Bexar County are served by more than 15 different independent school districts (ISDs), with the largest being Northside ISD, followed by North East ISD and San Antonio ISD. Northside ISD has more than 81,800 students, 59 elementary schools, 15 middle schools, 13 high schools and 11 special campuses. North East has some 60,400 students at 39 elemetary, 16 middle and 18 high schools. San Antonio ISD has 57,500 students and nearly 8,000 teachers and staff at 51 elementary, 15 middle, 8 high schools, 14 academies and 4 special campuses.

Institutions of higher education in San Antonio include St. Mary's University, Trinity University, the University of Texas at San Antonio and the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, the Baptist University of the Americas, the Southwest Research Institute and the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research.
